Question: How can we change the organizational culture in healthcare organizations?

What are some of the unique challenges?
What do healthcare employers need to understand about their culture and what drives it?

Expert Insight

Healthcare ideally has a data driven, caring culture.  The economics of healthcare are complex and rapidly changing.  Yet most healthcare employees do not have much visibility of their organizations economics and consequently little understanding of those economics.  This limits their ability to make good economic decisions.  In the few situations that I have seen where healthcare staff have been involved in the economics, like the cardiac care unit of Johns Hopkins, engagement has soared with a culture of performance, benefiting patient, physicians, nurses and the financial results of the organization.
